VINEPAIR - SEPTEMBER 2018

Who among us hasn’t stocked our pantries with self-proclaimed “value packs” of flimsy, discounted toilet paper? Or bought expiring-soon-but-totally-on-sale bulk vitamins? We Americans are always thirsty for a bargain. And according to analysts, affordable wine is our white whale. “The holy grail for American wine drinkers is a cheap wine that tastes expensive,” Daniel Levine, the director of trends consultancy Avant Guide Institute, says.

LIFE AND MONEY - AUGUST 2018

While waiting in line at Sqirl in Los Angeles, one of the country’s hottest places for avocado toast (the au courant dish is a brown rice plate with sorrel pesto, salsa verde and poached egg), many have noticed that the neighborhood around it is changing.

“It’s the last hurrah of affordable pockets of Silver Lake,” says Coly Den Haan, owner of Virgil Village wine shop Vinovore.

SCOUT - JULY 2018

The Los Angeles neighbourhood of Silver Lake is the sprawling city’s most hip/hyped. Made up of mostly small character homes and apartment buildings on hilly and quiet residential streets, the area is bisected by Sunset Boulevard, the loudly immodest fast track for eating, dining and shopping on trend. It’s impossible to ingest Silver Lake in a single day, try though I may have. What follows, then, is one condensed chapter detailing the better places I shopped, ate and drank over a recent 24 hour period.

THE EPOCH TIMES - JUNE 2018

Drink of Choice: Rosé is a safe bet, especially if you’re grilling vegetables, fish, or chicken. If you want to step outside the norm a bit but stay in the same general rosé vicinity, try an orange wine! Right now I’m loving J. Brix’s Nomine Amoris orange wine—totally murky, funky, and fresh with hints of salted watermelon. What says barbecue more than watermelon?

LOS ANGELES MAGAZINE - MAY 2018

“The wines coming from this region tend to be very balanced with rich fruit, good structure, and soft acidity,” says Coly Den Haan, owner of Silver Lake wine shop Vinovore, which stocks multiple Mexican wines. She also notes that several of the Baja wineries are still working with the Mission grapes that were planted for those early sacramental wines, a varietal rarely seen in commercial production anywhere else

WAZ WU - MAY 2018

First things first, I kicked off Seed Grand Tasting with a sparkling rose from Vinovore, a wine collective featuring lady winemakers. To pair with the bubbly, I enjoyed Follow Your Heart’s grilled cheese and tomato soup shooter before moving on to Daiya cheese quesadillas, Kite Hill cream cheese crisps, and Miyoko’s cheese cubes (that smoked mozz!)

SUPERCALL - MAY 2018

“I love The New Jalisco Bar in Downtown Los Angeles. Not sure why it’s called ‘New’ because the first time I went there, it was many, many years ago, and it certainly wasn’t new back then. They proclaim themselves to be the first gay bar in Downtown, and I believe it! They cater to a predominately LGBTQ Latino crowd, but they are super welcoming to whoever wanders through their matte black doors.

DISCOVER LOS ANGELES - MAY 2018

Wine tastings seem to be the new happy hour, with the addition of trivia and knowledge thrown in for good measure. Tastings can even be found at grocery stores, such as select Gelson’s, Whole Foods, and the Trader Joes on La Brea for free or nominal fees. Wine shops like the independent K & L Wine Merchants in Hollywood and The Wine House in West L.A., or corporate spots such as Total Wine also offer tastings. Some of the most interesting tastings are held at small, boutique wine shops, often located in strip malls or hidden in places you least expect, with eclectic food choices that often differ from the basic crackers and cheese

SCOUT VANCOUVER - MAY 2018

The clever concept is executed elegantly in a homey, pressure-free atmosphere that includes a settee centrepiece for reclining on while pondering whether you’re feeling more mammal than reptile. Since Silver Lake is virtually a mirrored sisterhood of Mount Pleasant, Vinovore could be airlifted from its Hoover Street address to one of the more retail-heavy stretches of Main Street.

EAT DRINK LA - MAY 2018

If up until this point your local wine shop has been Trader Joes, then its time to step your game up! Vinovore in Silverlake is a wine shop founded by Coly Den Haan and carries female winemakers almost exclusively! This Monday May 21st take the opportunity to sample wines from Kristie Tacey of Tessier during their One Happy Hour tasting from 5-6 PM ($15). You might never want to leave!

THE VINGAURD - MARCH 2018

A few friends have asked me which venues in the wine industry they should avoid as they do not wish to patronize those who discriminate against, harass or in any way devalue women. Boycotts serve a purpose but I’m more interested in promoting the people and establishments who do a lot to support women so let’s do the inverse and have a Girlcott!
